Injured Worker's Day - June 1st
Injured workers, their families, advocates and unions will celebrate the 29th anniversary of June 1, 1983 - the day when thousands gathered in front of Queen's Park to successfully protest the government's plans to eliminate the permanent disability pension. Injury should not mean poverty. After all, injured workers gave up the right to sue in return for fair compensation for workplace injuries and illnesses.
The Night Before: May 31st - Region 5 PWC Movie in the Park
The Women of Inspiration, a Toronto injured worker group, is planning an overnight vigil outside the Legislative Assembly on May 31st to remind MPPs that many injured workers cannot sleep because they have to worry about pain and poverty. The Region 5 Women's Committee is currently arranging to partner with the group and show the 'Triangle Shirtwaist Fire' - the story of an industrial file where 146 workers were killed of which 123 were young women & girls. The experiences of the women in the fire are indicative of the economic direction of the country at that time. A lot of sweatshop factories where young women
(mostly immigrants) worked in low wage dangerous conditions. Today our economy doesn’t recognise the millions of women who do domestic work (nannies, housekeepers, caregivers). They are almost an invisible workforce in our economy that we don’t account for and protect and respect. More information is available at www.injuredworkersonline.org

NEW Postcard Campaign for Pregnant women being laid off or fired across Ontario
The Ontario Human Rights Legal Support Centre is receiving 10-15 calls per week from pregnant women who have been fired or laid off because they are pregnant. This is a blatant violation of their Human Rights based on their membership in designated groups, specifically family status, sex and disability. OPSEU is initiating an MPP postcard campaign and will also contact every MPP requesting they raise the issue during Question Period.
